Ventnor on the Isle of Wight

Ventnor

Ventnor sits on the side of St. Boniface Down one of the highest points on the Isle of Wight. Ventnor is effectively in two parts, upper Ventnor which is the main shopping area, where you can spend time browsing the many antique, curio and speciality shops including  'Ventnor Rare Books' which sell's second hand and antiquarian books, especially Isle of Wight history and Queen Victoria.

Lower Ventnor is accessed by Travelling down the 'cascade', a winding road to the sea front and esplanade where a completely different vista. awaits you.

Hotels, Bars, Restaurants, Cafes and kiosks, everything you would expect to find in a British holiday resort, are sited alongside the curved sand and shingle beach, where years ago Charles Dickens arranged games of rounders.

A very popular bar and restaurant is The 'Ale & Oyster'  in a fantastic position serving fresh seafood and high quality locally sourced produce.

Laterly the esplanade has gone through a rejuvenation programme bringing a modern uplift to the area whilst still maintaining a Victorian seaside town feel.

By the nature of Ventnor being built on St Boniface Down several Hotels have taken advantage of these superb south facing sea views across the channel.

Ventnor prides itself in having some of the best Boutique Hotel Accommodation on the Isle of Wight, as well as a Michelin stared restaurant.

Ventnor has a very unique and advantageous southerly location and is sheltered by the highest Down on the Isle of Wight, affording a protected beach area which is an enviable sun trap for visitors to enjoy.

This in turn with the benefit of the passing gulfstream creates a microclimate quite unique to the Island, in fact Ventnor Botanic Gardens boasts many plant species that are akin to a warmer Mediterranean climate.

Don't miss a vist to "Isle of Wight glass studio" which is a short drive through the Undercliff, here you can actually watch the glass being blown and designed into items that are sold across the World.

The Isle of Wight's unique take on the world famous Edinburgh Fringe, The Ventnor Fringe Festival which will take place in various locations across the town from 17th - 20th August 2011
