Ryde Pier Isle of Wight

Ryde Pier on the esplanade in Ryde brings travellers directly to Ryde sea front from the mainland. Ryde Pier is the fourth longest pier in the UK protruding 681 metres out into the Solent, it is also one of the oldest in the UK. Ryde Pier was designed by John Kent who came from Southampton, this largely timber constructed pier was opened on 26th July 1814 having taken one year to build. A second pier was constructed along side the first pier to carry horse drawn trams which opened on the 29th August 1864, where passengers were taken from the esplanade by tram to the pier head. A third pier was added alongside the other two in 1880 and was opened in July of that year to give a Steam railway link to the pier head ferry service & is still in use today. The Pier was made a Grade II listed building in 1976. Reconstruction work was carried out on the pier by Wightlink ferry company in 2010/11 as the pier was starting to show its age the Ryde Pier is home to the Wightlink fast cat ferry service to Portsmouth harbour railway station which runs daily usually 10 to the hour & 10 past the hour.
