Bembridge Harbour

Add News

Bembridge Harbour on the Isle of Wight sits at the mouth of the Eastern Yar River. Before the embankment was constructed in 1800s the Yar River flowed to Brading creating marshland, mudflats & creeks that became known as Brading Haven.

Brading became one of the main ports on the Isle of Wight believed to have been in use since roman times.  It was reached by travelling upstream on a high tide via a meandering 2 ½ mile river from Bembridge estuary.

Bembridge harbour was formed in the 1880s by the creation of the embankment built to take a railway line from St Helens to Bembridge, bringing industry & tourism to the area. Looking at Bembridge Harbour as it is now you would never know it was manmade.

Part of this scheme was the draining of Brading haven making fertile farm land & the building of the Port of St Helens. The creation of St Helens Quay now Bembridge marina & the Royal Spit Head Hotel (no longer in existence) with its fleet of passenger steamers & a train ferry to transport visitors to the area created a boom in local tourism.

Bembridge harbour also became the main freight & tourist entry point to the Isle of Wight with railway sidings, warehousing, Gas works & a crane in use until the late 1950s, Hard to imagine know. Gradually with the closure of Bembridge station, freight being moved by road, the closure of the railways lines in the area created a change in the use of Bembridge harbour.

Now more a lined towards the leisure industry with fishing, sailing, power boating, water skiing & scuba diving all being enjoyed from the harbour including live aboard bed & breakfasts house boats. Bembridge Harbour offers visitors from the land & sea a beautiful picture post card scene with 2 yacht clubs, visitor moorings, local restaurants, pubs & sandy beaches to be enjoyed year round.
