Carisbrooke Castle

Carisbrooke Castle on the Isle of Wight perched above the village of Carisbrooke dates back to Roman times where fortifications have been found from that era.

When you look at the topography of the local landscape you can understand why Carisbrooke Castle was built & first used by the Romans.

Carisbrooke Castle commands the views around the local area and is a great example of a medieval Castle offering a near impenetrable location that has been developed over the centuries giving us a wonderful window from which to view the history of the Isle of Wight.

Carisbrooke Castle synonymous with King Charles 1st as his prison for 14 months before being transported to London for trial on charges of treason, found guilty & subsequently beheaded in 1649 turning England into a republic.  Carisbrooke Castle was also home to King Charles 1st 2 youngest children Princess Elizabeth & Henry 1st Duke of Gloucester under house arrest of which Princess Elizabeth died aged 14 in 1650 & is buried at St Thomas Church Newport Isle of Wight.

Carisbrooke Castle Isle of Wight never lost its links with the Royals throughout the centuries. Princess Beatrice Daughter of Queen Victoria while governor of the Isle of Wight lived in Carisbrooke Castle, and collected material which she used to open  a museum in the Gate house of Carisbrooke Castle on August 11th  1898 stating  "It is my earnest hope and desire that with the help and co-operation of others I may be able to form a full collection of objects of historical interest connected with the Island, so that this memorial gatehouse may become a museum worthy of such an interesting castle." The artefacts of the exhibition are based around King Charles 1st imprisonment in the Castle & the English Civil war.

Carisbrooke Castle museum is open to the public today.

Resent events at Carisbrooke Castle fields have seen one day pop festivals being held with the likes of Paul Weller & Madness performing.

Carisbrooke Castle now run by English Heritage is open to the general public daily, and has a strong educational involvement with mainland & Island schools that enjoy the slender of this beautiful Castle with its history & panoramic views of the Isle of Wight.
