Cowes Week Photo by Chris BoyntonCowes or West Cowes as it is sometimes called is a renowned yachting town situated on the west bank at the mouth of the Medina River. The name Cowes originates from one of the two off shore sandbanks in the estuary that had a likeness to the shape of a cow.
Since 1826 Cowes has been known as the Yachting Capital of the World, with its rich history of ship building believed to go back to Queen Elizabeth I.  The main shopping area in Cowes is the narrow pedestrianised High Street & Shooters Hill with a fine selection of chic designer Shops and outlets many catering for the exclusive shopper and the yachting fraternity.

Cowes has a selection of great Hotels to choose from with fantastic entertainment on offer from local groups playing in the Pubs Bars & Inns, superb Restaurants with a broad range of cuisines including the only Halal Resturant 'The Bahar' on the Isle of Wight.  As you stroll through the streets you will find a variety of traditional and themed Cafes, as well as an assortment of Takeaway Food to choose from.

The 8,500 competitors range from Olympic and world class professionals to weekend sailors. In excess of 100,000 spectators come to watch the sailing, enjoy the party atmosphere and watch the spectacular Cowes Week Fireworks

Cowes also hosts a number of events throughout the year including RIBEX one of Europe's most successful specialist powerboat shows. The start of the round the Island Boat Race a spectacular vision of sail with over 1700 craft taking part.

The British Powerboat Festival is held at Cowes,  where over 40 of the world’s top UIM Marathon Class racing boats compete in the Cowes Torquay Cowes race. 

As part of the regular Ferries to the Isle of Wight the Red Jet Catamaran service operates hourly from Cowes to Southampton. There is also a quaint chain ferry across the Medina River that links Cowes to East Cowes.
