Earl Mountbatten Hospice Isle of Wight

Add News

The Hospice was opened in August 1982 on the Isle of Wight as part of the National Health Service as a result of a public appeal in memory of the Island's Governor, Lord Louis Mountbatten, who was murdered in 1979. The money raised was used to convert the West Wight Ward of the Fairlee Infectious Disease Hospital. It provided ten beds and was called the Earl Mountbatten House Continuing Care Unit. The hospice has grown into the facility we have today giving care to Islanders with life threatening and incurable conditions...

The Earl Mountbatten Hospice is the only hospice on the Isle of Wight and cares for over 800 patients every year who face life-threatening conditions and their families.

While the majority of patients suffer from cancer, the Hospice also cares for patients with motor-neurone disease, renal failure, congestive heart disease and chronic chest conditions.

Patients are referred to the Hospice by their doctor, Macmillan or St.Mary's Hospital when they face an incurable condition. This may be in the last weeks of their life, but it may also be several years. We do this through our Day-Care Unit, 16 bed In-Patient ward, Out-Patients Unit and Family Support Team.

Our aim is to provide them with the best quality of life possible in the time that remains to them - medically, spiritually, and holistically.

The Earl Mountbatten Hospice is an independent hospice and receives a grant from the local Primary Care Trust, which covers about a third of the running costs. For the remaining £2.2 million, the Hospice is dependent on the public's generosity.

activisleofwight is actively helping with fund raising to keep this vital resource open, we offer free bronze business listings to companies and individuals on our website all we ask is for the advertiser to make a £20 donation to the hospice.
