Walks on the Isle of Wight

Red SquirrelThe Isle of Wight is renowned for having a wealth of footpaths and bridleways and is believed to have more footpaths per square mile than any other English County. 60 miles of coastal paths encompass the Island, with a variety of easy circular routes, and short town trails. There are over 500 miles of well maintained paths to suit the varied requirements of walkers and hikers on an island that measures only 23 by 15 miles.
The island Coastal Path can be walked in four days at a leisurely pace. The coastline is varied from white chalk cliffs to quiet estuaries, expect to see Cormorants, Shags, Herons and Little Egrets. Almost half of the coastline is designated "Heritage Coast", a definition applied only to coastlines of the highest quality and unspoilt nature.
Inland the chalk downlands are home to many unique wild flowers and fauna including wild orchids, and is famous for its shy and rare Red Squirrels, while Buzzards and kestrels can be seen circling above the farmland. More than half of the Island is recognised as being an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, where you will stumble upon picturesque villages with quaint watering holes and places to eat.

 

The Isle of Wight Council's Parks and Countryside produce a free leaflet every April and September.
Wight Summer has 100+ walks and events for the period April to September.
Wight Winter has about 50 walks and events taking place between October and March.

The Island also has walking festivals being held through the year, these suit all levels of ability and fitness. These range from short walks of 3 miles or less to 15 miles or more at various speeds   gentle or moderate to brisk with different levels of difficulty from easy to strenuous.
