The Merry Wives of Windsor


At Cineworld in Newport from June this year, you can experience Shakespeare as if you were really at the Globe. Four plays, captured during the 2010 critically acclaimed  ‘Kings and Rogues’ season will feature in this year’s cinema series, each showing in cinemas for ONE NIGHT ONLY, commencing with The Merry Wives of Windsor on Monday 27th June 2011.

The Merry Wives of Windsor, directed by Christopher Luscombe, was a huge hit at the Globe in 2008 and again in 2010, going on to become an internationally successful tour. Featuring Christopher Benjamin as Shakespeare's wily rogue Falstaff, with Serena Evans and Sarah Woodward as the two merry wives, Shakespeare's brilliantly constructed farce - often described as the forerunner to today's sitcoms - bursts with colour and humour in this delightful production.

 

Imagining that Mistress Ford and Mistress Page have each fallen for him, the fat knight Sir John Falstaff decides to seduce them both, as much for their husbands’ money as for their personal charms. Wise to the old rogue’s tricks, the women turn the tables on him with a series of humiliating assignations and a very damp, extremely smelly laundry bas­ket. Shakespeare’s hilar­ious and brilliantly constructed farce gave birth to a tradition that reaches down to the modern TV sitcom.
