Ventnor Isle of Wight Winter Gardens To Close

The Winter Gardens Ventnor Isle of Wight are to close on the 31st of January following the Isle of Wight's Council spending review. The Winter Gardens in Ventnor is due to close shortly because of a funding withdrawal by the Isle of Wight Council to the Ventnor Town Council.


Ventnor businesses on the Isle of Wight like other towns around the Island derive the majority of their income from tourism it receives each year.  By closing such a venue is clearly depriving Ventnor residents and visitors the use of this much needed resource. This method of cost cutting will in turn reduce the amenities available to visitors and in the long term affect the income received by local businesses as less people visit Ventnor.


The Isle of Wight receives around 2.5 million visitors a year and should see a steady increase in these numbers over the coming seasons taking into account the British public's attitude leaning towards taking holidays in Britain to save money due to the current economic climate.
Would it not make more sense to keep venues such as the Winter Gardens in Ventnor and other venues & buildings around the Island open giving our visitors more opportunity to enjoy the amenities the Isle of Wight has to offer, rather than depriving the tourist of places to visit and risking them not returning in future years which would severely damage the Island's economy in the long term.


Surely there can be some form of council and private business partnership or initiative put in place that could save such venues having to close from this form of cost cutting exercise, whist also helping the employment situation in areas like Ventnor on the Isle of Wight.
